Le
16 février 2000, elle a été jetée dans un soi-disant « centre de détention
et de transformation pour Falun Gong » organisé par le Bureau de la rue Chengguan. Les fonctionnaires du Parti communiste l'ont
battue en utilisant des brochettes en plastique et des matraques électriques.
Les autres pratiquantes détenues ont pu entendre ses cris douloureux. Les
fonctionnaires communistes ont exigé qu'elle renonce à sa croyance pendant
qu'ils la frappaient comme des fous, ce qu'elle a refusé avec fermeté. Le matin
du 20 février de l'an 2000, Chen, à moitié morte, devait avancer pieds nus à
quatre pattes dans la neige. Les deux jours de tortures lui ont causé de graves
blessures au niveau des jambes. Chen a vomi et s'est évanouie. Elle n'a plus
repris conscience.
